About a week ago I told you that my friend Aubrey and I were beginning group workout classes at a local fitness center. The first class we tried out was insanity, and oh my goodness it was intense. The next day we opted to try something that focused more on cardio than strength training, and would (hopefully) be a little bit easier for us since we just beginning to get in a habit of working out.
A week ago was my first time ever taking a piloxing class. For those of you who haven’t heard of this fitness craze, piloxing is a workout that combines boxing and Pilates with the objective of promoting strength, flexibility, and agility. The exercise incorporates weighted gloves into the sequences in order to maximize the results of the cardio moves as well as the strength training.
My first thought during the class was (and please don’t hate me) this is way more exciting than insanity. While I have every intention of returning to the insanity classes offered at my fitness center, I really enjoyed that the piloxing sequences were a bit more varied than the ones I had done in insanity. However, like insanity, piloxing was still very challenging, just in a different way than . After getting my comparisons out-of-the-way from my previous experience, I was able to evaluate piloxing as the entirely different workout regiment that it is.
Piloxing was set to an upbeat playlist that got me excited to start the workout. We began a bit slowly with running in place, jump rope (minus the rope), and some stretches that transitioned into squats. From there we went into the piloxing sequences that combined the boxing moves with some standing Pilates. The workout ended with floor Pilates.
Overall I really enjoyed piloxing and look forward to going back. It was fun and definitely got my heart-rate up. Although I must admit I hope I get better at some of the moves. My instructor made everything look effortless and graceful, I hope with repetition, I will be able to mimic them better.
